May brings two excellent films: Oscar nominated IO CAPITANO from Italy and for our 18th Anniversary, THE MONK AND THE GUN a comedy from Bhutan. I'll have to check but I believe this is our first film from this small, beautiful country nestled next to the Himalayas.
Our Foreign Film Series usually screens two films each month, the first and third Mondays at 3:30pm and 6:30pm at Plaza Cinemas 14. We will continue our mission of providing the Best of World Cinema to the Oxnard and Ventura County community along with supporting local filmmakers Thanks and Be Safe, George J. IO CAPITANO
2023 Italy 2hr 2minutes
Drama NR
In Wolof and French with English subtitles
NOMINATED for Academy Award for Best International Film.
In this acclaimed film which won top directing and acting prizes at the Venice Film Festival, writer-director Garrone presents a “reverse shot” of the immigration experience while unfurling an epic, cinematographically magnificent odyssey from West Africa to Italy. The story is told through the mind’s eye and experiences of two Senegalese teenagers living in Dakar who yearn for a brighter future in Europe. Yet between their dreams and reality lies a treacherous journey through a labyrinth of checkpoints, the scorched Saharan desert, a fetid North African prison and the vast waters of the Mediterranean where thousands have died packed inside vessels barely fit for passage. "Hopefulness and disillusionment, the paradoxes of a journey that always keeps us moving." - Paula Vázquez Prieto, La Nación (Argentina)
"Garrone’s film has a three-dimensional and devastatingly realized human soul at its core. The world could do with paying attention to Seydou’s story and the millions of other real ones like it." - Leila Latif, indieWire "In his Oscar-nominated, migrant-themed “Io Capitano,” he unites those varied impulses, fashioning a hero's journey that feels utterly of the moment: inspired by the true stories of African immigrants, but told in a way that features episodes of both harrowing verisimilitude and hallucinatory magic realism." - Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post |

THE MONK AND THE GUN
2023 Bhutan 1hr 47minutes
Drama/Comedy PG-13
In Dzongkha and English with English subtitles
Bhutan's Submission to the Academy Awards for Best International Film.
The Monk And The Gun captures the wonder and disruption as Bhutan becomes one of the world's youngest democracies. Known throughout the world for its extraordinary beauty and its emphasis on Gross National Happiness, the remote Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan was the last nation to connect to the internet and television. And if that weren't enough change, the King announced shortly afterwards that he would cede his power to the people via their vote and a new form of government: Democracy.
Celebrating out 18th Anniversary.

"A droll, shrewdly satirical fable, in which Western values crash against a seemingly intransigent (but potentially more enlightened) South Asian culture." - Peter Debruge, Variety
"The film pulls off something truly bold: taking what are perhaps the most emotionally and symbolically loaded items in existence and subverting their meaning completely to end on a note of peace, joy, and hope for the future." - Ross McIndoe, Slant Magazine "An unexpectedly suspenseful shaggy dog story, as well as a pretty funny one, with subtly pointed barbs about American politics." - Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post |

LA CHIMERA
2023 Italy 2hr 10minutes
Drama/Comedy NR
In Italian with English subtitles
After the death of the love of his life, English archaeologist Arthur (Josh O’Connor) is desperate to find the mythical door to the afterlife -- but to do so, he must team up with a network of tomb raiders who break into ancient tombs in search of archaeological wonders to sell on the black market.
Everyone has their own Chimera, something they try to achieve but never manage to find. For the band of tombaroli, thieves of ancient grave goods and archaeological wonders, the Chimera means redemption from work and the dream of easy wealth. For Arthur, the Chimera looks like the woman he lost, Beniamina. To find her, Arthur challenges the invisible, searches everywhere, goes inside the earth – in search of the door to the afterlife of which myths speak. In an adventurous journey between the living and the dead, between forests and cities, between celebrations and solitudes, the intertwined destinies of these characters unfold, all in search of the Chimera. "Mournful yet exuberant, “La Chimera” is a towering work of art presented with the unassuming invitation of a warming summer morning." - Carlos Aguilar, Los Angeles Times
“La Chimera” sneaks up on you. Rohrwacher is a discreet virtuoso with a visual style that is appealing and demonstrably unshowy." - Manohla Dargis, New York Times "This film is clever, ambitious, and funny throughout, but it also works as an intelligent meditation on our attitudes toward life, love, and death." - Peter Sobczynski, RogerEbert.com |

"By the end, we’ve soaked up something of modern Macedonia and had our own cultural standards put to the rack." - Amy Nicholson, Washington Post
"Housekeeping for Beginners will not tell you much about keeping order amidst domestic chaos, per se. It is a primer, however, for turning a house into a home." - David Fear, Rolling Stone "There are many greatly moving moments in the director’s third feature, all connected by a heartfelt understanding of the value of nurturing companionship." - Rafaela Sales Ross, Little White Lies |
